tshirt illustration design with windsurfer

I was stoked to be asked to design the Tshirt again this year for the New Zealand Wavesailing windsurf Nationals. This was the final result, featuring a fairly realistic illustration of the kind of conditions we usually get around here for the event. The style follows on from last years design and was of course the main highlight of the event for most competitors…well apart from maybe the winners . ;)

Summer arrived with a grand entrance and enough wind to well and truly blow any cobwebs away with force! I’m talking seriously windy with 4.0 & 3.7 sails being used and overpowered and calls of “windiest Pungarehu ever”! That was the first day and though I ventured down for a look, time and wind was not in my favour.

On to the saturday…and still VERY windy but looked a lot more manageable and the wind looked constant. Started off with taking a few shots on the beach, testing out my new Canon 2x Extender on the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8. Still a bit to learn using this new addition to the kit, any user error is paid for in a drop in image quality and it’s giving the tripod a run for it’s money, but been getting a few shots that I’m quite happy with.

Soo that was the surf photo session..I then went out for a spin myself, rigged up a 4.2 and grabbed the Thruster waveboard. Was out about an hour in semi-overpowered conditions, scored a few decent waves, the board lets you do some awesome feeling turns with fully engaged nose to tail rail in effect! Started thinking it was time to head in before I got over tired and the arms gave way when I caught one of the bigger set waves of the day… started off well, then cranked a bottom turn up into the pitching lip, was a bit late but figured I give it a go. Unfortunately the wave won and spun me right over and under, which normally would have been ok but my front foot stayed wedge in the strap, with me dangling along for the ride as the board twisted and turned.

One trip to the docs and an Xray later and it’s now 5 or so weeks in plaster. Ahh summer fun…!

PWA pozo 2009 winner

As you may gather if you’ve been here before I’m into my windsurfing/ particularly wavesailing, so just had to post up this new vid clip of the PWA winner at the Pozo event. Even if you don’t sail I’m sure everyone can appreciate the awesomeness of some of these moves (back loop into forward loop, dbl forwards, lip slide floater 360!) Looks like the future of windsurfing is in good hands with 15yr old up and comer Philip Koester pushing the level so high, I reckon we’ll be seeing plenty more of him around thats for sure!

Starting to get amped for own windsurf comp we have here in Taranaki New Zealand – The Taranaki Wave Classic. Currently helping out with the all new website update (keep checking in a couple weeks time!) and busy designing up the new years event styles, T’s, posters, trophies…!

Another T design! This was an extra Limited Edition T design done for the New Zealand Wavesailing Nationals 2009 event. Featuring  fiendish sea monsterish waves attackin the helpless competitor as he battles the sometimes extreme Taranaki windsurfing waves!

OK well the conditions didn’t quite live up to expectations unfortunately with only a few small waves around and not much wind…but at least everyone was stoked with their exclusive T!

Can read up more about how the event went over at Deepfried.tv or via the event runner Carbon Art.

Taranaki Wave Classic 2008 / tshirt

Here is the Tshirt design for this years TWC competition. All entrants got one for free when registering so if your keen on getting one…well might have to wait till next years design and come join the comp! Actually there may be a couple extras so drop me an email if your interested in grabbing one of the last few left.

These were printed with a combination of standard screenprint ink for the black and discharge ink process for the blue and white. Gives the print a nice subtle contrast between the colours texture and keeps that nice soft feel in the larger print areas.

Taranaki Wave Classic 2008 / trophy

What a weekend! The windsurfing event of the year in New Zealand, the Taranaki Wave Classic (TWC) is at an end. With some extremely high winds and some mast high waves there was some very challenging conditions for the competitors. Some impressive sailing was definately on show!

Congratulations to all involved and of course to the winners of the event. Keep an eye on Carbon Art and DeepFried for a news article and full results.

I was particularly pleased this year as I was asked to design the winners trophies and also the Tshirt. As one of the event judges I can safely say these trophies were well earned by the winners.  I hope everyone enjoys the designs, check out the trophies below. (Tshirt pics up soon!)

Here is the Tshirt design I did for the New Zealand Wavesailing Nationals 2008. A rare item indeed with only 30 tshirts printed for competing sailors (and the shore crew!). No amount of begging, pleading or bribery will get you one of these I’m afraid! The competition was run over the Easter weekend with some awesome waves and not quite as great wind. Visit Carbon Art news section for a full rundown of the event.

Pungarehu playtime

Flight sequence

We’ve enjoyed some excellent days of windsurfing in Taranaki over the last week. I managed to fit in some photo sessions and test out my new camera equipment before getting out there myself – believe me sometimes watching this sort of action when you sail yourself makes it hard to take pictures for too long!
