Growl

Monsta-font-alphabet

As I’m off adventuring tomorrow to Europe, thought I’d leave you all with something small to remember me by :)

It’s my Little Monsta font type I started developing for the character seen above (in vector and handmade wooden keyring form). There’s also an animation of him on own of his own adventures I did a while ago that will show up here one of these days…keep checking back as I’ll try dig it out from the hard drive and post it up soon!

Just a bit of fun, but if your in need of some growly roars then this type might just do the trick. Creating even this simple font really opened my eyes to the amazing powers that true typographers must wield. Their patience, dedication and diligence is something to be respected that is for certain. The design of the alphabet and integration of each letter with it’s possible letter partners so we can merrily type away is more than I could manage to perfect…for now at least!

I guess you could say “the beast is in the details”… right I’ll get my coat ;)

Download Monsta font . Free for you to use, credit me if your feeling generous and show me what monsterrific work you did with it!

doodle, colour, print!

doodle

Thought I’d post up this fun little design project I completed recently. An open brief to do a birthday party invite! Armed with the knowledge of knowing he loves his fly fishing I had the idea of doing some fishing line based typography, which of course naturally required including an intoxicated looking trout into the design! Being a masterful woodworking craftsmen I knew he’d appreciate a hand finished look so this really helped define the graphic style I was going for.

Really enjoyed putting this one together from a sketch and doodle, through to inking up, scanning, colouring in the marvel that is Photoshop, and finally printing, chopping up and delivery.

the answer to “what is design”?

designis

The following pictures are a small selection taken at the 3 Scoops Exhibition in response to the question that as a designer you are often asked… What is Graphic Design?

Using the hand made letter type blocks (DIY tutorial coming soon!), visitors where invited to display their answer on the grid of nails. Once this was done some disposable cameras where on hand to document their thoughts. Enlightening? Accurate? In need of censorship? Well yes and no and definately yes to some of them! One things for sure, everyone had very different ideas on how to answer. Highlights for me was watching the kids really get into it, even going as far as using the letter blocks to build towers to reach the top line! :) Sometimes what appears to be a simple question can lead to more questions rather than answers…

And of course your answer is more than welcome too!

graduate exhibition

Found some time to get a few pictures up of my exhibition space. All came together in the end, just in the nick of time…one last watering of the lawn and the doors opened for the exhibition. We had a great turn out with a few hundred visitors coming to check out everyones works on show. It seemed my free postcards prints and badges were pretty popular, with the badges dissapearing extrememly quickly!

Saw a few people having fun with the letter blocks (particularly the kids) so looking forward to getting the disposable cameras developed to see some of the results to the question ‘Design is’ . Keep checking back to see if you can spot yours!

A book

Just completed a little personal design project I’ve been doing. The book uses a selection of my photographs combined with poems from New Zealand poetry. Each poem and photo was chosen to best complement each other, with the typography uniquely set for each piece in an effort to further enhance the feel.

The binding was done with french fold technique (so pages are folded on the outisde edge) and held together with the great simple Japanese binding method. A tutorial for this can be found here!

A few of the layouts and the cover….
