As I’m off adventuring tomorrow to Europe, thought I’d leave you all with something small to remember me by
It’s my Little Monsta font type I started developing for the character seen above (in vector and handmade wooden keyring form). There’s also an animation of him on own of his own adventures I did a while ago that will show up here one of these days…keep checking back as I’ll try dig it out from the hard drive and post it up soon!
Just a bit of fun, but if your in need of some growly roars then this type might just do the trick. Creating even this simple font really opened my eyes to the amazing powers that true typographers must wield. Their patience, dedication and diligence is something to be respected that is for certain. The design of the alphabet and integration of each letter with it’s possible letter partners so we can merrily type away is more than I could manage to perfect…for now at least!
I guess you could say “the beast is in the details”… right I’ll get my coat
Download Monsta font . Free for you to use, credit me if your feeling generous and show me what monsterrific work you did with it!

Thought I’d post up this fun little design project I completed recently. An open brief to do a birthday party invite! Armed with the knowledge of knowing he loves his fly fishing I had the idea of doing some fishing line based typography, which of course naturally required including an intoxicated looking trout into the design! Being a masterful woodworking craftsmen I knew he’d appreciate a hand finished look so this really helped define the graphic style I was going for.
Really enjoyed putting this one together from a sketch and doodle, through to inking up, scanning, colouring in the marvel that is Photoshop, and finally printing, chopping up and delivery.

(and yes the party was great fun too
)

The following pictures are a small selection taken at the 3 Scoops Exhibition in response to the question that as a designer you are often asked… What is Graphic Design?
Using the hand made letter type blocks (DIY tutorial coming soon!), visitors where invited to display their answer on the grid of nails. Once this was done some disposable cameras where on hand to document their thoughts. Enlightening? Accurate? In need of censorship? Well yes and no and definately yes to some of them! One things for sure, everyone had very different ideas on how to answer. Highlights for me was watching the kids really get into it, even going as far as using the letter blocks to build towers to reach the top line!
Sometimes what appears to be a simple question can lead to more questions rather than answers…
And of course your answer is more than welcome too!

Think he might be on to something here! ^

Happy to present my daughters Tshirt design entry for the Little Help project competition. Although she was not a winner she did an awesome job of drawing one of her characters ‘Sludgy’ and sending it in! Not only was she the youngest entrant she also is featured on the website as a design worth recognition! Check it out so cool!
Very proud dad off to raid her doodle book for ideas now…
Just joined up to the best logo collection available online: the great and wonderful Logo Pond. It’s a source of some awesome inspiration and brimming full of amazing logo designers. If you haven’t visited before (or even if you have!) get over there and feast your eyes on some really great modern logos.
You can find my logo design offerings on my Spore* profile so you can drop by and leave a commment or two. (Best done over a freshly brewed mug of tea or cup of coffee).

Another T design! This was an extra Limited Edition T design done for the New Zealand Wavesailing Nationals 2009 event. Featuring fiendish sea monsterish waves attackin the helpless competitor as he battles the sometimes extreme Taranaki windsurfing waves!
OK well the conditions didn’t quite live up to expectations unfortunately with only a few small waves around and not much wind…but at least everyone was stoked with their exclusive T!
Can read up more about how the event went over at Deepfried.tv or via the event runner Carbon Art.

Here is my entry to the “peace is…” competition going on over at Social designer. I went with something that focuses on the fun side of things and that the idea of peace is a simple one within everyones reach. And of course the easy to remember message that Peace is truly AWESOME! Head on over to check out the entries and if your feeling generous vote for mine thats if you like of course!

Happy to announce the release of a new charity tshirt design I did for Plunket in conjunction with The H Initiative . Plunket does lots of great work supporting infants, kids and young families so it was great to give something back! It was really fun illustrating this one, can’t wait to see it on running around and covered in dirt
There’s a couple release writeups at Scoop and Fashion New Zealand with a bit more info and even some NZ celebs getting in behind the cause that was featured in New Idea magazine last week!
The Tshirts have just been released for sale in a variety of colours, you can check out New Zealand stockists here for baby and kids sizes. Adult sizes are also available exclusively from The H Initiative (small ones available worldwide from there also). Grab yourself one and an extra one or two for your friends kids now before they all go!
