Urbis Magazine interview !

urbis magazine new plymouth article

urbis magzine article on graphic designer spore olivier perkins

Very happy to let you all know (if you didn’t already) I’ve been interviewed in the latest Urbis design magazine. Featuring a few questions about me as a graphic designer, what I do and some recent projects I’ve been working on. Along with some great shots of the studio (wow the studio’s never looked so tidy ;) ).

The magazine also features some highly talented New Plymouth’ian (and Okato’ite!) creatives, which I am very honoured to sit alongside with in the pages.

You can grab yourself a copy at most magazine shops around New Zealand & Australia. It’s out now if you’d like a look!

FAVOURITE PHOTO FRIDAY #30

storm thorgerson in new zealand

Semi-Permanent 2010 ! Yes I was there….thus giving me a proper reason for the late pic this week, or rather last week ;)

The photo above is of the big screen at the superb New Zealand leg of the great Semi Permanent design event. The image itself was orchestrated live  by none other than the legendary Storm Thorgeson (if you don’t know the name check the link and see that you definitely know his amazing work!). It took a couple of attempts to create the piece that was simply entitled “4D Fuck Avatar”. A small example of Storm’s fine British humour and his willingness to express his thoughts on the way things are. Great stuff :)

And yep if you look close you can even spot me in the crowd, haha! (pic is also up on my Facebook if you want to tag yourself on there)

Board illustrations got featured!

Stoked to find out the new board graphics I did for Carbon Art boards got featured in the latest Windsurf (UK) magazine! If you missed it I did a post before showing the new 2010 illustrations and designs I created which you can check out here.

If you’re wondering why it says ‘Recycled Carbon Art’ it’s due to the use of a great new fibre in the boards called Innegra – it’s made using a green factory process.

Apparently the new waveboards also got a show off in the latest Boards mag too…just trying to track down a copy here in NZ so I can have a look!

FAVOURITE PHOTO FRIDAY #13

board graphics illustrations

This weeks favourite photo is a sneak peek at a project I’ve been working on for a while…a new redesign of Carbon Art waveboards! Featuring all new illustrations and graphics that can be customized – letting board buyers choose their colour and choose the image for their board.

Releasing soon so will keep you updated with the full reveal as soon as I can!

Tshirt Illustration Design : NZ Wavesailing 2010

tshirt illustration design with windsurfer

I was stoked to be asked to design the Tshirt again this year for the New Zealand Wavesailing windsurf Nationals. This was the final result, featuring a fairly realistic illustration of the kind of conditions we usually get around here for the event. The style follows on from last years design and was of course the main highlight of the event for most competitors…well apart from maybe the winners . ;)

Art, Design & construction Process: Splore Cubes

art installation for splore festival

Here’s a few images showing some of the process behind the creation of the Cubes I made for the recent Splore festival 2010 (see previous post). The brief and concept was all about creating something for festival goers to enjoy, interact, have fun and tie in with the theme of Midsummer Nights Dream 2050. An added essential was that it had to be able to survive 3 days with 7,000 people…

The concept I came up with was to build sixteen 40cm squared cubes with letters on several sides, patterns on another and one side that when fitted together correctly, formed a complete image.

Surfboards in colour?!

surfboard-bag-2

surfboard-bag-3

Been meaning to post this up for a while…here’s a surfboard bag (or sock) I put together some weeks ago. For a few dollars worth of material, a spare shoelace from the last pair of Vans I bought and maybe half an hour of cutting sewing time (with the help of my lovely misses!) made myself this sweet board bag. Protects from the knocks and scrapes from banging around in the car/garage, stops the bottom getting covered in wax when it’s piled in the heap of surf search boards and even brightens up the office space when it’s hangin in the corner waiting for it’s next outing!

It’s a fairly simple sewing job and lets you create a board bag in the style you want rather than an off the shelf monotone clone. :)

Had a quick look around and turns out I’m not the only one crafting their own… Check out Bogus , Shelter & Ahoy for more hand made surfboard bag inspiration and then get sewin!
